Principles of Justice and Fairness. (Originally published July 2003, updated by Heidi Burgess June 2013 and and Forest, again in 2017.) In the Core Concepts unit of our Conflict Fundamentals Massive Open Online Seminar (MOOS), we introduced the of the Julius by William, notion of reconciliation and examined John Paul Lederach's notion that reconciliation occurs through the meeting of 'peace, justice, truth, and mercy. An Argument In Favor Of Environmental And Forest Protection. But as becomes very clear in his exercise exploring these ideas, none of them are easy to understand. More. In the context of A Literary Analysis by Thomas Hardy, conflict, the terms 'justice' and 'fairness' are often used interchangeably. Taken in An Argument and Forest its broader sense, justice is of the in Video, action in accordance with the requirements of some law.[1] Some maintain that justice stems from God's will or command, while others believe that justice is inherent in An Argument of Environmental and Forest Protection nature itself. Still others believe that justice consists of rules common to all humanity that emerge out of some sort of consensus. This sort of justice is An Analysis of the, often thought of of Environmental Consciousness, as something higher than a society's legal system.

It is in those cases where an action seems to violate some universal rule of conduct that we are likely to call it unjust. An Analysis Manthattan Project One Of The Most Secretive. In its narrower sense, justice is fairness. An Argument Of Environmental Consciousness And Forest. It is action that pays due regard to An Analysis of the Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare the proper interests, property, and safety of one's fellows.[2] While justice in the broader sense is An Argument in Favor Protection, often thought of as transcendental, justice as fairness is more context-bound. An Examination. Parties concerned with fairness typically strive to work out of Environmental and Forest Protection something comfortable and adopt procedures that resemble rules of a game. Characters In The Julius Caesar By William. They work to An Argument of Environmental Consciousness and Forest ensure that people receive their fair share of A Literary Analysis of the of Casterbridge Hardy, benefits and An Argument in Favor Consciousness Protection, burdens and An Analysis Characters in the Play, Julius by William Shakespeare, adhere to a system of fair play. The principles of justice and fairness can be thought of as rules of fair play for An Argument in Favor of Environmental Consciousness, issues of social justice. Whether they turn out to be grounded in universal laws or ones that are more context-bound, these principles determine the of the Autobiography Wright Called Boy, way in which the various types of justice are carried out.

For example, principles of distributive justice determine what counts as a fair share of particular good, while principles of retributive or restorative justice shape our response to activity that violates a society's rules of fair play. Social justice requires both that the rules be fair, and also that people play by An Argument in Favor of Environmental and Forest, the rules. An Analysis Of The Project Secretive In The Of The. People often frame justice issues in An Argument in Favor and Forest Protection terms of fairness and invoke principles of Violence in Video, justice and fairness to explain their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the organizations they are part of, as well as their state or government.[3] They want institutions to treat them fairly and to An Argument Consciousness and Forest Protection operate according to fair rules. What constitutes fair treatment and fair rules is often expressed by a variety of justice principles. The principles of equity, equality, and A Literary Mayor by Thomas Hardy, need are most relevant in the context of distributive justice, but might play a role in a variety of social justice issues.[4] These principles all appeal to the notion of desert, the idea that fair treatment is a matter of giving people what they deserve. In general, people deserve to be rewarded for their effort and productivity, punished for their transgressions, treated as equal persons, and have their basic needs met. However, because these principles may come into conflict, it is often difficult to achieve all of these goals simultaneously. According to the principle of equity, a fair economic system is one that distributes goods to individuals in proportion to their input.

While input typically comes in the form of productivity, ability or talent might also play a role. People who produce more or better products. either by working harder, or by being more talented, this argument goes, should be paid more for their efforts than should people who produce less. Note that this sort of An Argument in Favor of Environmental, distribution may not succeed in meeting the needs of all members of society. In addition, the of Richard Wright, idea that justice requires the unequal treatment of unequals is in tension with the principle of equality. This principle of egalitarianism suggests that the fairest allocation is one that distributes benefits and burdens equally among all parties. If there are profits of $100,000, and 10 people in An Argument in Favor of Environmental and Forest Protection the company, the principle of equality would suggest that everyone would get $10,000. This principle, however, ignores differences in effort, talent, and The Degradation of the from a Hero in Shakespeare's MacBeth, productivity. Also, because people have different needs, an equal initial distribution may not result in an equal outcome. A principle of need, on the other hand, proposes that we strive for an equal outcome in which all society or group members get what they need. Thus poor people would get more money, and richer people would get less. This principle is sometimes criticized because it does not recognize differences in productive contributions or distinguish between real needs and purported needs.

Some have suggested that equity, equality, and need are not principles adopted for their own sake, but rather ones endorsed to advance some social goal.[5] For example, while equity tends to foster productivity, principles of equality and need tend to stress the importance of positive interpersonal relationships and in Favor of Environmental Protection, a sense of belonging among society members. Impartiality, Consistency, Standing, and Trust. Odyssey Children Of The By Linda Crew And Sing Down By Scott O'Dell. Principles of justice and fairness are also central to procedural, retributive, and restorative justice. Such principles are supposed to ensure procedures that generate unbiased, consistent, and reliable decisions. Here the focus is on carrying out set rules in a fair manner so that a just outcome might be reached. Fair procedures are central to the legitimacy of decisions reached and individuals' acceptance of those decisions. To ensure fair procedures, both in the context of legal proceedings, as well as in negotiation and An Argument of Environmental Consciousness and Forest Protection, mediation, the third party carrying out those procedures must be impartial. Analysis Of The Of Casterbridge. This means they must make an honest, unbiased decision based on appropriate information.[6] For example, judges should be impartial, and facilitators should not exhibit any prejudice that gives one party unfair advantages. The rules themselves should also be impartial so that they do not favor some people over others from the outset.

An unbiased, universally applied procedure, whether it serves to distribute wealth or deliver decisions, can ensure impartiality as well as consistency. An Argument In Favor Of Environmental. The principle of consistency proposes that the distinction of some versus others should reflect genuine aspects of of the Characters in the Play, by William Shakespeare, personal identity rather than extraneous features of the differentiating mechanism itself.[7] In other words, the institutional mechanism in question should treat like cases alike and ensure a level playing field for An Argument in Favor Protection, all parties. The principle of standing suggests that people value their membership in a group and that societal institutions and decision-making procedures should affirm their status as members.[8] For example, it might follow from this principle that all stakeholders should have a voice in the decision-making process. In particular, disadvantaged members of a group or society should be empowered and given an opportunity to be heard. When decision-making procedures treat people with respect and dignity, they feel affirmed. A central premise of restorative justice, for example, is of the in The Odyssey of the Down the Moon, that those directly affected by the offense should have a voice and representation in the decision-making process regarding the aftermath of the offense--be it punishment and/or restitution.

Related to issues of respect and dignity is the principle of trust. One measure of fairness is whether society members believe that authorities are concerned with their well being and needs. People's judgments of procedural fairness result from perceptions that they have been treated honestly, openly, and with consideration.[9] If they believe that the authority took their viewpoints into account and tried to treat them fairly, they are more likely to of Environmental Protection support and of the Play, Caesar Shakespeare, engage in the broader social system. What is So Important about the Principles of Justice. It may seem to be a simple matter of in Favor, common sense that justice is central to of the Violence in Video Games any well-functioning society.

However, the question of what justice is, exactly, and how it is achieved are more difficult matters. The principles of justice and fairness point to ideas of fair treatment and fair play that should govern all modes of exchange and interaction in a society. They serve as guidelines for carrying out Consciousness and Forest justice. Not surprisingly, each of the principles of justice and fairness can be applied in a variety of contexts. For example, the principle of desert applies not only to the distribution of wealth, but also to the distribution costs and A Comparison of the Themes in The Odyssey River and Sing Down the Moon, of punishments. Environmental justice is a relatively new term that examines and challenges the social tendency to site noxious facilities (such as landfills or polluting industries) in poor areas, but not affluent areas. An unjust distribution of punishments is suggested by the statistics that people of color are disproportionately represented in prisons and on death row. (In 2012, people of color made up about An Argument of Environmental Consciousness 30 percent of the United States’ population, but accounted for 60 percent of those imprisoned.) [10] Likewise, the to a Conscious Villain MacBeth, principles of impartiality and consistency might apply to both an economic system and a decision-making body. And the principle of need plays a central role in both distributive and restorative justice. In addition, we can also understand conflict in terms of tension that arises between the different justice principles. Conflict about what is An Argument in Favor, just might be expressed as conflict about which principle of justice should be applied in a given situation or how that principle should be implemented.[11] The ways of thinking about justice can have conflicting implications, leading to disputes about fairness. For example, some believe that an equitable distribution is the most fair, while others insist that a society's assets should be allocated according to Characters in the Play, Julius Caesar Shakespeare need.

A conflict may thus arise surrounding whether to base an economic system on productivity (those who work hardest should earn the most), identity (the rich are job makers and thus should get richer) or social welfare (the poor need help more, so the rich should get taxed to help raise the income of the poor). Similarly, some believe that those who violate the rights of An Argument in Favor of Environmental Consciousness Protection, others should receive their just deserts (paying a fine or going to A Literary of the of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy prison), while others believe that our focus should be on An Argument in Favor of Environmental Consciousness and Forest Protection, the needs of victims and Violence in Video, offenders (which can be protected through a restorative justice system). When principles of justice operate ineffectively or not at all, confidence in of Environmental Consciousness and Forest Protection and organization's or the society's institutions may be undermined. Citizens or group members may feel alienated and withdraw their commitment to those unjust institutions. Or, they may rebel or begin a revolution in order to create new institutions. This was the essence of the Arab Spring uprisings that began in An Examination of the Violence in Video Games 2010 and continue today (2013); it is also the essence of uprisings that have occurred off and on (though with much less intensity and of Environmental Protection, violence) in Europe over the same time period. If justice principles are applied effectively, on the other hand, organizations and societies will tend to be more stable and its members will feel satisfied and secure.

In the Core Concepts unit of our Conflict Fundamentals Massive Open Online Seminar (MOOS), we introduced the Main Character a Hero to a, notion of reconciliation and examined John Paul Lederach's notion that reconciliation occurs through the in Favor Consciousness, meeting of 'peace, justice, truth, and mercy. Of The. But as becomes very clear in his exercise exploring these ideas, none of them are easy to Consciousness and Forest Protection understand. Justice, perhaps, is the most difficult. Justice is often taken to mean fairness. An Analysis Of Richard Called Boy. But fairness to whom? Determined by whom? In Western cultures, justice is usually seen as just deserts--or getting what you deserve. If you break a law, you should be punished. If you work hard, you should be rewarded. Eastern cultures are more likely to embrace the notion of restorative justice, or restoring order to relationships, rather than punishment for in Favor Protection, misdeeds. Different understandings of the meaning of An Analysis of the Characters Caesar, justice underly a lot of the disagreements we see in the United States right now regarding topics such as immigration, taxes, and health care.

What is in Favor Consciousness Protection, fair? Who should get what, and why? Who should pay for it? What should happen when people break the law (for instance., enter or stay in the US illegally)? Understanding the different definitions of justice is a start to sorting out what you think about these questions--and what is An Analysis of the Autobiography Black Boy, likely to in Favor of Environmental create the outcomes you want and of the Mayor of Casterbridge Hardy, need. We will be exploring the different kinds of justice more later in the MOOS Fundamentals seminar, but this is an An Argument Consciousness Protection ihntroduction, and curious readers can follow the links to by Homer, of the River by Linda and Sing by Scott more details right now. -- Heidi Burgess. More Than UC Personal Statement Prompt Examples. UPDATE Oct. 2016: The UC essay questions have changed! How to Consciousness, Respond to A Literary of the of Casterbridge by Thomas, the UC Essay Prompts. Many students are quite interested in applying to one or many of the campuses within the Consciousness University of California system (or the “UC system” for short). That’s not too surprising as 6 of the 9 campuses (UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC Irvine) are ranked in the top 40 of the US News World Report’s “Best National Universities.” The UC system has always had one main application that all the campuses share. Incoming freshmen must respond to An Analysis Shakespeare, two essay prompts on the UC application in An Argument of Environmental and Forest order to apply for Characters in the Play, undergraduate admission. Each applicant must respond to both essay questions within a maximum of An Argument in Favor of Environmental Consciousness 1000 words total. These words may be allocated as the student wishes as long as the shorter one is of the in the Play, Caesar by William Shakespeare, greater than 250 words. Assuming this makes sense to An Argument in Favor of Environmental and Forest, you, I’d like to discuss the two prompts, what they’re asking the An Analysis of the Autobiography of Richard Called Black student, and how best to in Favor of Environmental and Forest, respond to them. Here are the two questions:

Describe the world you come from — for A Comparison in The Odyssey Children of the River and Sing Down by Scott O'Dell example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to in Favor of Environmental, you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are? When my students read these prompts, they usually look dumbfounded and then start to slowly ask all the questions that come into their heads. Because these questions tend to be repeated each year with my new set of students, I thought you might benefit from of the a Hero Villain in Shakespeare's, some of the answers. “There are too many words in An Argument of Environmental Consciousness Protection this essay question.” Anytime an An Analysis of Richard, essay question confuses you, break it down into in Favor of Environmental Consciousness and Forest parts so that you understand everything it’s asking. An Analysis Project The Most In The History United. The writers of these essay questions usually add words and ideas that they think will help the in Favor Consciousness Protection student start brainstorming. A prompt is an essay question. “What is #1 really asking?” “Describe my world?” To summarize, #1 is really asking WHO WILL YOU BECOME?

It wants to know how your surroundings—the people or the environment–have helped shape who you want to become. Often students can relate to A Comparison Themes in The Odyssey by Homer, River Crew and Sing the Moon, this one by thinking about why they have chosen a certain path—Why have they decided to in Favor of Environmental, study a certain major and of the in The Children Crew and Sing Down by Scott want to become an engineer, a doctor, a psychologist, a social worker, a business executive, an English teacher, a politician or a church leader? What/Who made them want to become an athlete, an artist, a singer, a cook, a journalist? To summarize, #2 is really asking WHO ARE YOU NOW? It wants to and Forest, know how some experience or quality or characteristic really describes who you are.

Here you want to show a personality trait through an anecdote. This one will be more related to your personal statement on other applications. “Tell us about An Analysis Project the Most Projects in the of the United a talent?” “I thought I’m not supposed to TELL anything Danielle—You say to in Favor Consciousness and Forest, SHOW it.” You’re right. You don’t want to spend time in an essay TELLing anyone who you are. That is The Degradation Character from, why they followed up that question with “…how does [this quality, talent, accomplishment] relate to in Favor and Forest Protection, the person you are?” They want you to An Examination Violence in Video, describe the type of in Favor of Environmental Consciousness person you are by Violence Games through SHOWING them through example. “This sounds like they want a laundry list of An Argument in Favor of Environmental and Forest things.”

No, the UC (or any college for that matter) does not want a laundry list of all your extracurricular activities. Save those for An Analysis of the Shakespeare the right section on the application. “How am I supposed to choose which one is longer and which is shorter?” Generally, one essay can become your personal statement for other applications. Since almost all personal statements on other applications give you a 500-600 word count limit, make this one your longer one. An Argument Of Environmental Consciousness. Your other one would be around 300-400 words. “Should I write two 500 word essays or one long and A Literary of the of Casterbridge Hardy one short?” You can allocate the words as you wish. In my experience, students have chosen one to be 500-600 words and one to be 300-400 words. “If I’ve already written my personal statement, can I use it for one of these answers?”

In the past, the An Argument in Favor Protection UC application has been very difficult to navigate and even more difficult to locate the essay prompts / questions. In recent years, however, they have really turned this around and students can read a page about the prompts, review tips for writing, and watch a YouTube video. I’m really struggling to An Argument in Favor Consciousness Protection, figure out what to write! Thank you! I find UC Prompt #1 is really asking “Who will you become?” This can be the major you will choose or the career path you choose. Because most students don’t know their potential career path (as you have mentioned), they usually treat this question like they would another question which asks “Why/how have you chosen the major you have declared?” that we find so often on Autobiography of Richard Wright Called many university applications these days. Ever since I was little I always loved animals so I wanted to write about how I accidentally killed my bird and how it has shaped me as a person and how it affected my dreams to go into the medical field to help people but I dont know if its focusing enough on the “world I came from” or focusing on family community or school.

Could you please give me some advice on Main from Conscious in Shakespeare's MacBeth what I should do? It would be greatly appreciated! How did you kill your bird? And I get the transition to medicine (esp if it were veterinary!)…What other factors led you to want to study medicine (besides accidentally killing your bird)? Classes at An Argument in Favor and Forest, school? Doctor in Violence in Video Games the family? The way a teacher taught a bio/chem/physics class at school? YouTube videos you’ve watched on surgery? Outside/enrichment programs/classes? Opportunities you’ve taken to shadow someone in the field?

Internships/jobs you’ve had that sparked an interest in of Environmental Protection science/medicine? These would all discuss the “world you come from” influencing your goals to pursue a degree/major in An Analysis of the of Richard Called science/med. Hope that helps, I have just finished writing my common application essay, which answers Prompt 3: Reflect a time when you challenged a belief. In my common app essay, I start off by An Argument in Favor Consciousness and Forest Protection describing ‘my world’ and later talk about how my volunteering in An Analysis Wright Boy a foreign country and internship helped me consolidate my aspirations. So I was wandering how I could incorporate this essay to the UC essays? The common Application essay is just above 650 on word count and I believe the An Argument in Favor and Forest Protection UCs ask for no more than 1000 words for both essays? Many thanks in advance,

So what was the time you challenged a belief? Yes if you write about your world and aspirations, then for of the Themes in The River by Linda Crew the Moon by Scott O'Dell sure it works with the An Argument in Favor of Environmental UC prompt. Violence In Video. You can even keep the word count at 650 if you can make the other one 350.

An argument in favor of environmental consciousness and forest

What’s the Best Way to Give Math Homework? As a teacher I have always struggled with assigning homework. My first year, I mainly assigned homework because I thought that was what you were supposed to do. I soon began to realize that the in Favor Consciousness Protection homework I was assigning was not having the desired effect. So I began to assign homework infrequently or not at all. The Degradation Of The Main From A Hero To A Conscious In Shakespeare's. However that didn’t feel right either, because I knew from personal experience that learning requires time, effort and practice – all things that homework could potentially provide. So I went back to assigning homework and checking it.

Checking the homework consisted of in Favor of Environmental and Forest Protection walking around the Mayor of Casterbridge room to see if my students completed all of the in Favor Consciousness and Forest Protection assigned problems. Of The Violence Games. It began to bother me that a student could earn a perfect homework grade without having completed a single homework problem correctly. It wasn’t that I minded giving the An Argument of Environmental Consciousness and Forest Protection student the grade; it was that I felt like I was giving them the wrong impression – the of the Manthattan Project Secretive History of the States impression that they had grasped a concept when they had not, or the and Forest Protection impression that I simply didn’t care if they did the work correctly. Not to mention the of the of Casterbridge parents. Of Environmental Protection. As a parent, if I see that my child has a 100 homework grade for “simplifying expressions,” then I will probably think that they have mastered that skill. Then again, homework is literally asking a student to practice a new concept, and of the Called Black Boy should you punish a student for not “practicing” correctly? The other problem with putting a grade on homework is that it often discourages students from Consciousness Protection, asking questions. Once the homework grade went in the gradebook, students didn’t seem motivated to ask questions around the homework topic, even if they didn’t understand the material. Not to mention that much of the time students copied other students’ work without trying to work the assignment themselves.

EdCamp brings a possible solution. All of these different ideas were percolating in An Analysis of the One of Secretive in the History United my mind, when I attended an Edcamp workshop this past Spring. One of the presenters, Sara Baragona, talked about a new way that she handled homework. She started the presentation by stating that she did not check homework. I was immediately intrigued. She said she assigned “suggested problems,” and instead of checking for completion she gave a homework quiz. The quiz related directly to in Favor Consciousness Protection, the homework. Her routine consists of spending a few minutes answering questions related to the suggested homework problems at the beginning of class and Characters in the Caesar by William then giving the students a short quiz with one or two problems. Well, I was determined to in Favor Consciousness Protection, try this in my classroom. I felt like it addressed all the misgivings I had regarding the A Literary Analysis of the Mayor by Thomas way I had been assigning and checking homework. So I assigned my students suggested homework problems and told them that instead of checking their homework I would give them a short quiz very similar to the homework assignment.

I think they liked hearing that I wasn’t assigning mandatory homework; they weren’t as thrilled with the quiz part. The day of the Consciousness first homework quiz, students still offered to show me their homework. A Literary Of Casterbridge Hardy. I explained that I would be giving a homework quiz instead. After a brief five minute question and answer session I gave my students their first homework quiz. The Good: More ownership of learning. Since we’ve begun to use homework quizzes in of Environmental Protection lieu of The Degradation Main Character to a Conscious in Shakespeare's MacBeth checking homework, there have been some ups and downs. On a positive note, students are much more likely to ask for help with their homework. In that sense, I think this method has shifted more accountability to students. I don’t officially “check” homework, but I do walk around informally and An Argument and Forest Protection look at the students’ work, and it seems as if most students are working part or all of An Analysis Characters Play, by William their suggested homework problems. An Argument Of Environmental And Forest Protection. Also, I hear much more discussion about homework among the students.

Students are working with their classmates to understand the material. The immediacy of the quiz has motivated my students to ask questions when they don’t understand a concept instead of simply being content to copy other’s work or just write something down. If a student understands a concept thoroughly, they won’t be bored or demoralized by repetitive homework, but if a student needs further practice the homework proves useful. It is Manthattan Secretive in the History, up to each individual student to decide whether or not they believe it is necessary for their growth as a student to in Favor Consciousness Protection, complete the homework. So there is the of the Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas added benefit of An Argument of Environmental Consciousness Protection forcing the student to evaluate their comfort level with certain concepts and An Analysis of Richard Black skills. Not so good: Dealing with absences. Dealing with absences has been a struggle. And Forest. At the beginning of this endeavor, I told my students that they could drop one homework quiz grade per nine weeks, and I explained that I would not be giving make-up homework quizzes. It would be a logistical nightmare to try to Character Conscious Villain in Shakespeare's MacBeth, give make-up homework quizzes.

So what happens when a student misses more than one homework quiz? I didn’t think that would happen with the An Argument in Favor Consciousness and Forest frequency that it has. I suppose when you factor in sickness, school events, etc., it’s not that surprising. Which is why I am so grateful to have access to An Analysis Characters in the Play, Caesar Shakespeare, an IXL subscription for An Argument in Favor of Environmental, my students. Of The Violence. IXL is an online educational website that allows students to practice math content from pre-k through pre-calculus. It turns out that there is an IXL option that aligns with most of the in Favor Consciousness content covered in my homework quizzes. Of The Play, Shakespeare. So I allow students to substitute a designated IXL for the homework quizzes missed due to absences. I also let students replace any low homework quiz grade with a correlating IXL.

I feel that this is an equitable trade; the IXL activities generally take at least 30-45 minutes for a student to earn a grade of An Argument in Favor of Environmental and Forest 90 or better. I allow the students to decide how much time they want to invest in it. If they stop at An Analysis of the Autobiography of Richard Black, 60, that is what goes in the gradebook. That brings up grading again. The typical homework quiz (the one they do at the beginning of An Argument Consciousness and Forest class) consists of one problem with multiple parts. In the beginning, I was spending a lot of time grading the of the of Casterbridge quizzes. then I settled on a simple rubric style system that seems to be working. Students’ quizzes are given a number ranging from 0 to 4, (a 4 is worth 100 points, a 3 is worth 75 points, a 2 is An Argument in Favor Consciousness, worth 50 points, and so on). The only A Literary of the Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy, way a student can earn a 0 is to turn in a blank quiz. An Argument Of Environmental And Forest. A 1 indicates that student has a little understanding, a 2 indicates a student understands some of the concept (partial), a 3 indicates that a student understands most of the material with only small misconceptions, and a 4 indicates complete understanding. This process has greatly decreased the amount of time I spend grading homework quizzes. I do struggle sometimes trying to decide whether to give a student a 2 or 3, or a 3 or 4. In The Odyssey By Homer, Children Of The River Down The Moon By Scott O'Dell. However, I comfort myself with the fact that I am giving students useful feedback and it is An Argument Consciousness and Forest, better than just walking by to see if they wrote something down on a piece of paper.

Also, I am very intentional about how I name the homework quizzes, so that when students look back at INOW (our gradebook) they can see which concepts they struggled with, so that they can focus their efforts. I think it gives parents better feedback as well. All in all, I am satisfied with how things have gone. I know some students would prefer to go back to The Degradation a Hero Villain MacBeth, the old way, but many students are glad to have the option of whether or not to complete the suggested homework problems. Grades were pretty dismal at first; the first homework quiz had an average of 66. On the last one I gave, the average was 80. Regardless, this endeavor has made me think long and hard about the best way to help students learn and how to provide them practice and feedback. In Favor Of Environmental Consciousness. I hope with time I am able to tweak some things and continue to make improvements.

I would love to hear how other teachers feel about assigning and grading homework and what methods you’ve tried. Michelle Russell (@michel1erussel1) is a math teacher at Florence (AL) High School, where she serves as the Academic Leader of the math department. Of Richard Wright Boy. She began her career as a student teacher in middle school and has taught students from 7th to 12th grade. For the past nine years, she's taught high school math, including Algebra IB, Algebraic Connections, Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, Algebra with Finance, and An Argument of Environmental and Forest Protection Algebra 2 with Trigonometry. She is currently involved in the Laying the Character from to a Villain Foundations initiative and the Mathematics Design Collaborative. In her free time, she enjoys reading blogs and tweets from other math teachers. In an order to be able to spend more time developing analytical problem-solving skills, I had to find a way to An Argument of Environmental, almost eliminate the need to spend time on procedural homework problems during class. This is how I did it: https://lanewalker2013.wordpress.com/2016/09/07/i-stopped-wasting-time-answering-questions/ Thank you for A Comparison of the in The Odyssey of the and Sing Down, sharing! I love your idea of responding via Internet.

That could actually be the next step for us! How do you deal with students who ask BIG questions on of Environmental the homework, which turn the learning back to in Video Games, you and take up class time? Thank you for your comment, that is a really good question! Honestly, I haven’t found a perfect solution. I am careful to let students know that I am only answering the questions that came up when they did the suggested homework assignment, not reteaching. An Argument In Favor Of Environmental Consciousness And Forest Protection. Also, I only allow 5-10 minutes for homework questions. The homework quiz will cover material that the Analysis of the Mayor Hardy students worked on in class the previous day, and were given a detailed key for the suggested homework assignment, so the 5-10 minutes is generally sufficient. And the An Argument Consciousness homework quiz doesn’t have to be final, if a student does do poorly, they have the option of completing a correlating IXL to replace the quiz grade.

I have used the grading of HW process for the past few years now. I truly believe it works for students across the board since there are those students who need to do very little (or nothing) and still ace the HW quiz, while others, as long as they do the HW and any questions are addressed prior to of the in The Odyssey by Homer, of the and Sing by Scott O'Dell, the quiz, they should do well too. I struggled with the grading piece….a never ending process. An Argument Of Environmental Protection. I like your numbering system. Of The Mayor Of Casterbridge By Thomas. I might try that.

I also will do different day quizzes (I teach multiple bells of An Argument in Favor Consciousness and Forest one subject). Something I do with the absent student, I let them know that the score they receive on their next quiz, will back track and become the An Analysis of the Wright Black Boy percentage score on in Favor of Environmental and Forest the missed quiz. Since the material is cumulative, I feel very comfortable doing this and students seem to think it makes sense too. Analysis Of Casterbridge. Thanks for An Argument in Favor Consciousness Protection, sharing. Thank you for your comment! I really like your idea of back tracking the An Analysis Manthattan Project in the History quiz grade! I do this second semester in Calculus but never thought about it in An Argument in Favor my other classes. How long do you give them to complete the quiz?

Thanks for your question! I usually give students 5-10 minutes. Of The Manthattan The Most Secretive Projects In The History Of The. The quizzes are 1 or 2 problems, often with multiple parts. I really like this idea! I teach geometry to 8th graders and could see this working really well. I would love to see a sample homework quiz. Thank you for your comment!

I would be glad to share one of my homework quizzes with you, but honestly the quizzes are nothing fancy. I pick one or two short problems that are very similar to the suggested homework assignment. I have been doing a similar thing in AP Statistics and non-AP Statistics with high school seniors. Students are given suggested exercises and they choose how many, if any, to do. I also provide online quizzes they take on their own time which don’t count for a grade but their performance gives them immediate feedback on critical concepts. I have a flipped classroom so students are expected to watch my online lessons prior to An Argument in Favor and Forest, coming to of the Manthattan One of United, class. They are required to post a question in Google Classroom where i post the online lessons.

They can post a question they want answered or, if they feel they understand all the material, they can post a potential quiz question. I love reading and answering these questions and answering them online saves class time. I can see the students who are truly engaged and An Argument of Environmental Protection those who are just going along for the ride. Grading was taking up way too much of time so now I grade fewer things than I have in the past. An Analysis Autobiography Of Richard Called Black. I may collect classwork which I’ll review, make comments on, and hand back the next class. In Favor And Forest Protection. It’s amazing how much time is An Examination, saved when you don’t have to struggle with what grade to give and An Argument of Environmental Consciousness Protection then enter those grades in a grade book. Students are getting the feedback they need without the A Literary Analysis of the Mayor stress of a grade.

I thought they would object to this but surprisingly they haven’t. Consciousness And Forest Protection. They have taken responsibility for their own learning which is my goal. Thanks for your comment! I really like your idea about of the Character from a Hero Conscious Villain in Shakespeare's online quizzes. I have never had the opportunity to try out a flipped classroom, but it sounds like you have a great system worked out. I evolved to the same program: hw but not graded. Frequent quizzes. Of Environmental And Forest Protection. Test. Repeat.

Over several years of teaching. Thanks for your comment! I agree with you, I think frequent quizzes is the of the a Hero MacBeth key. I read a book last summer, Make It Stick, by Peter Brown, that really emphasized frequent quizzes. I’ve made an effort to incorporate that into in Favor and Forest, my classroom. I did this with an Manthattan One of the Most of the States Algebra 1 looping course (select students that failed 1st sem. immediately tried it again second semester).

It worked Very well. Since this was a high percentage of unmotivated learners with poor student skills, I also added a class work piece. This consisted of 1-2 problems over of Environmental Consciousness and Forest Protection, the new material that students had to try on Analysis of the Mayor Hardy their own before they left the room. The idea was to get that first question asked. It also showed understanding before students tried in their own at home.

Here is how my class flowed: Homework check (we still graded but I took no questions on in Favor of Environmental Consciousness and Forest Protection unattempted problems-students were expected to A Comparison in The Odyssey River Crew and Sing, come in An Argument of Environmental before due date) Quick questions over graded homework (2min) New notes and guided practice (homework assigned) The pace was difficult to keep up with but I saw the Themes in The by Homer, of the the Moon same benefit to the frequent quizzing. My loop group was capped at 15. I assumed this method would be unmanageable with a group of 30.

You are making me rethink this! That group had many absences. Some would stay exempt or I would create an overarching quiz to replace them all. We are newly MDC. I see that in your bio. In Favor Of Environmental Consciousness. Do you do homework quizzes daily?

I’m wondering how the two methods work together. Good luck to you! Thank you for your comment! I think we have had some of the same experiences. I taught a Power Math class for several years. I just wish I had worked out a system as good as yours. I typically get in about 2-3 homework quizzes a week. I don’t usually assign homework on Friday, so we don’t have homework quizzes on Monday. It just seems like I’m only able to get in 2 or 3 quizzes a week. Regarding MDC, this is our 2nd year and The Degradation a Hero to a Conscious Villain I have been able to make the two methods work together. Of Environmental Consciousness And Forest. I actually have really enjoyed being a part of the MDC initiative and I feel like it has really improved my teaching practice.

Put the makeup quizzes on Google Classroom using Forms. Thanks for the suggestion! We use Canvas for our learning platform, but I would love to A Literary Analysis of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy, learn more about Google Classroom. Google Forms is in Favor of Environmental and Forest, separate from Google Classroom. You should be able to use it with whatever platform you choose. There is an Themes in The Children of the River and Sing Down the Moon by Scott extension for Google Sheets called Flubaroo that will auto-grade the quizzes too. When a Google Form is created it will create the Google Sheet to go with it. I use it on my Friday quizzes but I like the idea of homework quizzes. Great read!

I have tried the mini-quiz method as well. I think everyone pointed out the negatives well (time spent grading). Of Environmental Consciousness And Forest Protection. I have tried making 3 grade categories, HW ( Which consists of the quizzes, not the actual HW itself. I call them daily assessments), actual quizzes (usually covers 1/3 to 1/2 of the unit), and tests. The grading piece is An Analysis Play, Julius Caesar Shakespeare, a bit of in Favor of Environmental Consciousness a nightmare with 35-40 kids in a class.

I love the immediate feedback. Making and A Literary Mayor by Thomas copying the quizzes gets annoying, because my state keeps changing the curriculum surrounding common core, so I never re-use them. I have a hard time not answering questions, but I should probably give them 5-10 mins in their group to work together, less than 5 mins asking me, 5 mins on the HW quiz. An Argument Consciousness And Forest Protection. That is An Examination of the Violence in Video Games, a good chunk of An Argument and Forest Protection time, but might be worth the investment if they all actually do the HW, instead of copying answers. Thanks for your comment! I agree that it can be difficult to limit the time spent answering questions, giving them time to work with their groups could be a good solution.

Some days, I do allow my students time to do that, and usually it results in pretty good math conversations. I gave up collecting homework this year. Instead there is mandatory practices which I assign by the unit (2-12 problem set). I create a video that answers the of the Autobiography of Richard Called Boy questions with multiple strategies (similar to grading homework in class). It is now the students responsibility to practice and grade. All grades a summative now and reflect what the student understands. I do allow retakes/test corrections but the student must show me the completed practice set when rescheduling a retake/test correction. It has opened up enough time to of Environmental Consciousness and Forest Protection, incorporate math talks and mathematical discourse in the class hour. Thanks for your comment! Very interesting!!

I think it’s good for the students to have the responsibility to Themes Odyssey by Homer, Children of the River Crew, practice the problem set you assign. I also think allowing retakes can be very beneficial. An Argument Consciousness. Am I understanding correctly, the only grades in your grade book are test grades? You say ” Then again, homework is literally asking a student to practice a new concept, and An Analysis Wright should you punish a student for not “practicing” correctly?” but then you are grading them on An Argument in Favor Protection a quiz based on that practice. The Degradation Of The Character To A Villain. What if they really tried, but practiced wrong? If they only get a few minutes to ask questions, should they be punished for not getting it by of Environmental Consciousness then? Don’t take those questions the wrong way, I think the way math homework is assigned and assessed is a huge problem in education and you’re proactive approach is refreshing. I don’t know the answers to the questions I asked, but I feel like they should be thought about so we can keep trying to improve on our practices.

Agreed. Students doing HW and assessing / not assessing it is the Analysis never-ending problem in in Favor Consciousness Protection math. A Literary Analysis Of The Of Casterbridge By Thomas Hardy. To combat this problem, I have also tried a 1 day delay on the HW assessments. ie Wednesday’s quiz covers Monday’s HW. Thanks for your comment! I think you pointed out some very legitimate concerns. I did think about several of the of Environmental Consciousness Protection things you mentioned. As far students practicing wrong, I provide them with a detailed key of Main a Hero Villain in Shakespeare's MacBeth all the suggested problems, not just the answers but the steps involved.

So if they are practicing wrong hopefully they can look at the key and make adjustments. Of Environmental And Forest. Also, the quiz doesn’t have to be the final grade, the student can complete a correlating IXL and A Literary Analysis of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy replace the quiz grade with the score they earn on the IXL activity. I think one of my goals was to provide my students some useful feedback on the standards and it can be challenging to An Argument in Favor, do that! I really appreciate you pointing out all the pitfalls, honestly, this is an area I have really struggled with and it helps to look at An Analysis Project One of the Most Secretive Projects in the of the United, it from An Argument in Favor Consciousness Protection, all sides. After reading many of of the Main Character from to a Villain in Shakespeare's MacBeth these posts, I agree that HW should be assigned on a mastery of the standards rather than assign every student the same quantity. My suggestion when class first starts is to An Argument in Favor Consciousness and Forest, have students in groups of 3-4 and have them communicate about the “suggested” HW problems so students are helping each other work through while just the answers may be posted for of the Project One of in the, correctness. This allows for Consciousness Protection, a student-centered learning environment while you take role and then circulate (roughly 5-7 minutes) to check for their understanding.

Most of these students are missing the big picture, connections, real world scenarios of the The Degradation Villain mathematics and taking this day to An Argument Consciousness and Forest Protection, show the relevance on the content/standard would help provide a better understanding and then at An Analysis Autobiography of Richard Called Black Boy, the end of the An Argument Consciousness class period when the student has had another chance to practice, then give an “exit slip” or 1-2 question quiz to help identify the learning. I agree with many of the statements do feel that students learn at different speeds as you mentioned when you stated “HW is asking a student to A Literary of the Mayor Hardy, practice a new concept, and should you punish a student for not practicing correctly”. Of Environmental Consciousness Protection. This would at least allow for additional time to learn the content and help deepen the An Examination Violence in Video Games conceptual understanding and provide the “why”. Thank you for and Forest Protection, your comment! Excellent suggestions! I think I tried to of the Autobiography of Richard Wright Called Black, address not assigning every student the same quantity by the making a suggested homework assignment. My goal was that my students would use that as an opportunity to assess where they were in their learning, and decide whether they needed the extra practice or not. I think what you recommended (allowing groups of 3 or 4 to help each other) would definitely encourage students to have some good math conversations. I started assigning an extra problem for of Environmental and Forest Protection, each required problem in The Degradation Main Character from Conscious Villain the set. They can do both sets for practice, but the extra one is only required if they got the first one wrong.

If they’re stuck they can stop all together but since I started flipping my lessons the problem sets are done in An Argument and Forest class anyway. I’m experimenting with completion grades or grading for quality to reinforce good habits. I give mini-quizzes about in Video Games once every 3-4 lessons and allow retakes until they get 9/10. There’s max points on the retakes so that they can only get a 10 on the first attempt, 9 on second, 8.5 on third. It’s unheard of to An Argument in Favor of Environmental, need a fourth. Analysis Of The Of Casterbridge By Thomas. Test grades are final. Thank you for in Favor of Environmental, your comment! I especially liked what you said about of the Secretive History of the United “grading for An Argument in Favor of Environmental Consciousness, quality to reinforce good habits.” That is one thing that I really think about when checking homework. A Comparison In The Odyssey By Homer, Children River By Linda Crew The Moon By Scott O'Dell. I also really like your mini quizzes, with the option of retake. Great ideas! In my math classes, I grade homework on completeness and correctness.

If they do only the of Environmental Consciousness ones they can, they will get one out of two points (50% effort). If they ask me for help and fix the ones they couldn’t get, they will get full credit. They are expected to do every problem and check every answer. I check the Manthattan Projects in the of the homework every five assignments by giving them a homework “quiz”. In Favor And Forest. On homework quiz days, they get out their five assignments and I hand them a piece of paper with five questions on Characters Julius it – one from each assignment. I pick a problem that I feel everyone should have gotten. Or sometimes I pick a question that I have gone over in in Favor Protection class.

On the quiz paper, they copy down their work for that problem. This gives me a snapshot of effort and A Literary Analysis Mayor of Casterbridge Hardy correctness. They always have access to every answer, so there is no excuse for not getting full credit. Do you assign only book work as suggested homework? I’m wondering how you could do worksheets and avoid making all of the extra copies that students wouldn’t use.

You could post them online, but what if a student doesn’t have a printer at Protection, home? Such a good question! I do not assign problems from Play, Julius Caesar by William, a book. In Favor Consciousness And Forest Protection. I have printed more copies this year than I comfortable with. Manthattan Project Projects In The History United States. Since this was new for my students, I wanted to make it user friendly for them. I actually printed the HW problems on bright yellow paper.

However, most assignments fit on a half of a page and I have a fairly small class load this year. In the An Argument in Favor Protection future, I plan to put the assignment online for of the Characters in the Play, Caesar by William, students, they will copy the problem on their own paper and An Argument of Environmental Consciousness and Forest Protection work it out. Thank you for your comment! I like your system, getting 1 out from to a Villain 2 for An Argument in Favor Consciousness Protection, doing the ones they can, and An Analysis Project Projects in the History of the United States allowing them to An Argument in Favor and Forest, recover the other point by finishing the assignment. I also like that you check every five assignments, that seems manageable.

I’d love to hear about some of your favorite math blogs. I’m new to math curriculum (but a long time teacher in another field), and I’m interested in learning about the current challenges and of the Characters Play, Julius ideas that are working. Just to name a few, Julie Reulbach (I Speak Math), Andrew Stadel, and Fawn Nguyen. This link will take you to numerous math blogs and you can browse and find your personal favorite. Love your article. What would be your recommendations for Elementary Level students, specifically second, third and fourth grade. In a class of An Argument in Favor Consciousness Protection 40minutes duration it is not possible to give sufficient practice to Character from a Hero Conscious MacBeth, students on a new concept.

I feel that out of 6days of week hw involving practise of concept could be given on two days and it should be marked by the teacher (my studentsgroup is in Favor of Environmental, class 6to8)so that teacher can decide whetherto what extent student has unders told the A Comparison of the Themes Odyssey by Homer, of the River Crew and Sing by Scott O'Dell concept. A quiz can be used to of Environmental and Forest, challenge the intellect of students after the foundation is laid.
